CommentsWe first went to Thunder Lodge about 50 years ago and I haven't been to Buena Vista in about 42 years. Just happened to think about Thunder Lodge and was shocked to find out it still exists and really looks the same. The last time I stayed at Thunder Lodge, John West drove the Jeep Grand Wagoneer and we went to Cottonwood Pass. Good to see some things haven't changed. Sad to read John passed away.

Commentsthe chances of the ciusre line allowing it is minimal at best. despite being billed as the Party Cruise line, they WILL NOT allow large groups of underaged kids on board. with only one legal adult 25 or over for every cabin. because they know damn well what ends up happening is you have a few rooms with all adults and the rest are all kids who are left to run around and cause problems. there is no way to get all the rooms together. each floor only has x number of rooms by category. plus once that floor's max is reached for the life boats that's it. so even if there are ten cabins that sleep 4 each on that floor, not all will be the same price( you have inside, outside, balconies and etc all together) there may be other people in the other cabins that make it so that 3 of the other cabins may only book 3 people in to it.and lets not forget all the legal crap.. passports, permission from the parents and whatnot.References :

CommentsWe love Thunder Lodge. We have stayed there since I was a child. Different owners come and go, and sometimes that changes things a little. Still, it's a homey place right in the middle of everything you would want to do in the valley and surrounding mountains. The price is great, and the place might be dated, but it is clean. Most cabins require you to bring half of your house with you, and then there is no contact with owners after the key is delivered. Here, you can have the cabin vacation you want with the added benefit of owners who will help with the necessities and point you toward your next adventure. My price has always been less than quoted. My dog has always been welcome (they even provided an extra sheet so she could continue her habit of sitting on the couch and not leave behind hair). It is one of the only pet-friendly places left in BV. I love being able to leave my pooch safely tucked in her kennel inside the cabin and walk to the Evergreen for breakfast as well as tubing down the creek when the water is high enough. If you want to be pampered, find another place. If you want to feel like this is your family vacation home, come here. You will not be disappointed.

CommentsThese reviews are quite a bit different than Trip Advisor's reviews! The place is great except for the fact that they are not advertised as self-serve cabins. The excessive (not always posted) penalties for not cleaning your own cabin before you leave, including trash removal and vacuuming, make this place less than ideal for overnight travelers.

Date: 10/19/2011 Time: 11:31 PM CommentsWe came the first week of October and really enjoyed everything. The Fall colors were perfect when we arrived. The cabin worked well for our family of 5. The kitchen was a little small, but it worked. Beds and couches were quite comfortable. The owners and front desk help were very friendly. We found Buena Vista and the area very much to our liking. The kids all want to move to BV now. Thank you for an enjoyable stay! The Eckerts from Iowa.

CommentsWhat an amazing place! We recently stayed for a short escape and the local Chamber HIGHLY recommended "Thunder Lodge". Well we were not disappointed. The property was neat as a pin, the cabins was cleaner than any place I have ever stayed and the owners were truly working hard at making sure everyone's stay was the best it could be. It's truly hard to find this level of pride and ownership in today's world. WE will be back The Davis Group Kansas

THANK YOU FOR THE GREAT ACCOMMODATIONS, THE "GATHERING PLACE" WHERE WE COULD ALL VISIT AND EVERYTHING ELSE YOU DO TO MAKE IT SO COMFORTABLE AND INVITING. Date: 07/18/2011 Time: 06:38 PM CommentsWe had a wonderful time in Cabin #7...sleeping with the window open was so relaxing as we were next to Cottonwood Creek! The cabin was comfortable for me, husband did not like the mattress (too soft for him). The hot tub was down..kind of a bummer. Overall, the stay was enjoyable! Would come back again and will recommend Thunder Lodge to family and friends!
Date: 07/05/2011 Time: 10:59 PM CommentsWow! What a treat. The Lodge is amazing..we stayed over the 4th of July yesterday and today. The place has been completely redone, and the cabins are amazing with new natural. I must admit it exceeded all expectations! The owners were just icing on the cake as they treated us as family. We did make reservations for next year and look forward to coming back from Texas. Thanks Darthula and Max for making us feel like family. The Walkers from Dallas Texas

"We drove in from the Springs on Hwy 24 into Buena Vista. The fall color was a brilliant golden yellow! We stayed the weekend at Thunder Lodge, a beautiful lodge right on Cottonwood Creek. We stayed in cabin 7 and had to sleep with our windows open even though it was chilly at night. The sound of the creek running next to our cabin was so peaceful and relaxing. We spent the days hiking and four wheeling. We had a wonderful weekend. The cabins are large with two bedrooms and kitchen. We are looking forward to skiing at Ski Cooper and staying at Thunder Lodge again!"
Date: 06/02/2011 Time: 12:16 PM Comments"We were very happy with our decision to stay at Thunder Lodge in Buena Vista. We were looking for a place in Colorado with lots of fun things to do, but with prices that cater to our budget. So many Colorado cities are so touristy and overpriced, we were happy to find a cheaper option.
The cabin was roomy and comfortable, and had great mountain views! They also have BBQ grills, and we enjoyed using the little kitchen and BBQ to cook dinner and breakfast. The cabins could be updated to be more stylish, but it had everything we needed, and we aren't picky about decor, and we aren't the kind of people who spend much of our trips indoors anyway. We liked that the cabins felt like they were out in nature, but were close enough to town for us to walk to nearby bars, restaurants, and a small park.
During our stay, we enjoyed whitewater rafting, hiking and fishing at Cottonwood Lake, taking beautiful pictures, horseback riding through mountains and streams, and enjoying some tasty Mexican food at the Coyote Cantina at Johnson Village, a few minutes from Buena Vista. If you are looking for an inexpensive mountain adventure, Buena Vista and Thunder Lodge are exactly what you are looking for!"
Date: 06/02/2011 Time: 12:15 PM Comments"I've stayed at the Thunder Lodge several times over the last two years and have always had a pleasant relaxing time. It's especially fun in the off season, when it's not too crowded. Cottonwood hot springs is right up the road, and easy access. A new owner has recently taken over, and they are a very kind and accommodating family that wants to make sure that you are happy with your stay there. They bent over backwards for us several times to get us bedding and kitchen supplies that were not readily available in our cabin. The cabins are roomy and cozy, with a full kitchen and separate bedrooms. Highly recommended."
CommentsStaying at Thunder Lodge was so fun. I am so greatly blessed to have stayed here with my family. This is a great way to experience the real Colorado. Amazing facilities. Peace be with you all
CommentsThanks Darthula and Max, you made our stay the most memorable. My husband is not in the best of health and everyone helped us in and out of cabins, drew us maps to see the sights and took time to just sit and visited with us when most would of been to busy. If life and health permits it we will be back in a month or two. This is the closet thing to having a family that we have. What a magical place and what magical people. J&T
CommentsWell they have now added ATving to the list and we loved it. We were the first to experience the new ATVs and my wife and grand kids were mesmerized. The cabins were roomy, shoot they are as big as my home, the couple that owns the place are amazing too. We fell in love with the whole group in the short time we visited. Thanks again for putting up with us and our grand kids but you have made lifetime memories for us all to cherish. The Bain's Group from Colorado Springs.
CommentsCan't wait to come back!! We took our two boys last year in July for a week and it was so much fun! The mountains are breathtaking!! We went flyfishing, jeep tour with High Country", river rafting, and just hung out at Thunder Lodge!! Max and Darthula were so accomodating they are great people with a great place to stay!! Hope to go back this summer!!! Thanks again for everything my boys have not forgotten and are ready to come back!! The Williams Crew from Oklahoma
CommentsAwesome place! We really enjoyed our stay. We were skiing at ski cooper which was only about 45 minutes away. Our heater went out and it was fixed with in minutes the service was great. We were recommended excellent places to eat. The cabin was very large considering how fair the prices were. Everything was very clean and it had a nice warm feeling to it. The area was quiet and we didnt have any trouble regarding noise or the other guests. I look forward to seeing the renovations that they plan on doing. I hope to return in the spring to fly fish and will be staying here again! Keith from Texas.
CommentsWe had a family reunion and we stayed at "Thunder
Lodge" Behind the lodge was the "Cottonwood Creek". I found some nice gold
on my first pan and not digging to much either. I got my nephew interested
big time. He was 11 years old and he got the fever. LOL I told him that on
the way home he should find some dirt and he could pan it out at his bath
tub. He told his parents that when they got home and they called me about
it. I just laughed, i had no idea they had stopped at a motel and some one
was building a building, and Brandon asked his dad to help him get some soil samples. Made me laugh. To this day he wants to move to Colorado when he gets on his own.
"Cottonwood Creek". is just a little creek back of the lode that you can
wade though. The bank is all of 3 feet high. I doubt to many people are
panning in there as it wonders around and though the town.
Have a great weekend!

CommentsHI..
It's not often that buying a pig in the poke.. so to speak..when booking
online...works out..but you UNDERestimate the appeal of your cabins..I
stayed there on 18 and 19th of,September ...in one of your cabins...and
absolutely LOVED it. The cabin was spacious, clean, had everything anyone could ever need for any stay , be it two nights..or two weeks; the grounds were immaculately maintained...it was quiet..and made my stay in Buena Vista outstanding..
Thank you again..

CommentsWe had a delightful stay at your lodge. The cabin was super clean and the beds were really comfortable. Excellent location for anyone staying in Buena Vista for sure. Numerous restaurants in walking distance and a lovely park along the river were added attractions. Thank you for making us feel at home. We hope to stay here again.

CommentsThanks for putting up with us. We did enjoy our stay with you. We had a mix up on our reservations but don't blame anyone as it was most likely my fault. Look forward to staying with you again. Take care of your little dogs. They sure are cute. Best wishes. The Greenwood bunch from Missouri.
CommentsFOUND YOU ON ATVCOLORADO.COM. WE CAME ALL THE WAY FROM OKLAHOMA CITY TO EXPERIENCE THE REAL OUTDOORS. WE RODE ALL SEVEN DAYS THERE, AND NEVER SAW THE SAME THINGS, ELK, SECLUDED MIRROR MOUNTAIN LAKES, EAGLES SOARING, INDIAN MOUNDS, GOLD MINES, AND THE LIST GOES ON. YOUR HOSPITALITY AND KINDNESS IS SOMETHING LACKING THESE DAYS. THE CABIN WAS PERFECT IN EVERY ASPECT. I AM A LAW OFFICER AND WILL RECOMMEND THUNDER LODGE TO ALL I KNOW. THANKS AGAIN FOR SUCH A MAGICAL STAY. THE MAYERS
CommentsOur visit from Texas was everything your add said. We whitewater rafted, zip lined, ATVed the high country and then spent one evening just soaking in the hot springs near the lodge. I envy that you wake up each day to such a stunning place. We already made reservations for a "white xmas" and will see you this winter. A class act all the way around, owners were gracious and friendly, cabins was larger than expected, comfortable as home and the outdoors was something we had dreamed about. Thanks again and take care friends. The Clarks of Spring Texas June
CommentsAmazing.. Truly a find. The cabins are 50-60's style which we really loved, they were extremely clean and cozy. We sat in the courtyard which is meticulously taken care of, flower beds and landscaping are something out of a movie set. We sincerely enjoyed the flashback in time and the magical stay. Thanks so much for sharing it with us. Tom and Dean from Wisconsin
CommentsWe just wanted to thank you again for such a nice stay. We were in cabin
7 and it was so comfortable and it had all that we needed--the bed was so
soft, we slept like babies. We especially loved the landscape, it was so
relaxing to just either sit by the creek or sit in one of the chairs on
the lawn and read a little.
You and your husband are super nice people and we hope to come and stay again real soon.
Take care and keep up the hard work!!! It is greatly appreciated.

CommentsWe love staying at Thunder Lodge. We have been staying at the lodge for the last
three years over the Christmas holiday. We keep coming back because of the roomy
cabins, grounds and location. New owners took over before Christmas 2009 and are
making substantial improvements to the property. We look forward to going to
Thunder Lodge as it is just the perfect place to stay during the holidays (ok -
anytime).

CommentsDear Thunderlodge friends,
Greetings from Columbia City, Indiana.
Our names are Ray and Becky Smith, and in April, we will be celebrating our 25th Wedding Anniversary. Buena Vista is our first choice. What a wonderful land lay out by Gods Hand. We hope to visit your beautiful part of the country soon this year. Thank-you and may God bless you all.
CommentsWe just spent another 2 weeks at Thunderlodge. This marks over 46 years of visiting BV. We look forward to coming to BV and Thunderlodge. The lodge is so convenient to all the activities of Buena Vista and surrounding communities. Within driving distance of most the hot fishing lakes, and of course Cripple Creek and Central City. What more could we ask for? The weather this year was beautiful. The fishing was terrific.
We did something new this year. Hot air ballooning. WOW! Everyone needs to see BV from 2000 ft above. Truly a "Buena Vista".
Count down until we return next summer: 315 days, 314, 313 .... Time can't pass fast enough.

CommentsMy family and I stayed at your place two years ago during Spring Break. We did not get to meet you because you were on vacation also at the time. We had a wonderful time. It was our first time skiing. The part we always talk about still to this day was what a wonderful time we had at your place. If anyone wants to experience the outdoors in Colorado and have a place to rest and unwind this in my opinion is the place to stay. The cabins are clean and comfortable and it is very quiet. Thank You for the wonderful memories.

We recently spent the weekend in the Alpine cabin. What a wonderful place. We enjoyed our stay thoroughly and made full use of the facilities, including the outdoor deck and barbeque and the wood stove. What peace and solitude. It was one of the most relaxing vacations I have ever had. I would highly recommend this cabin to anyone who really wants "to get away from it all". Jim and Jane, thanks so much for your hospitality and the very well-equipped cabin. Everything we needed was at our fingertips and we had a fabulous time.

Even though we only could spend a few days at your lodge, we had a great time. We really appreciated the very clean cabin and the well maintained grounds. You really know how to make people feel welcome.
As an added treat, the community of Buena Vista makes an excellent get away even for short visits. If you like friendly people and great food, your lodge and town have got to be on top of the list.
We want to come back there again so we can check out those fish in that creek by the cabins.
Hope to see you again soon,

I grew up at Thunder Lodge, as my aunt worked for the original owners. Her name is Nell Gordon, and I am Aleta. I am sure many of the old guests remember us. She is still retired in Oklahoma, and at 91 years old still works circles around me! It is so nice to see the news via this website. I am proud that the new owners keep the place as nice as I remember it, and the new additions sound very exciting. Sadly both John and Bessie West have passed from this world, but they would be honored that Thunder Lodge continues to provide a clean and high quality place for visitors to enjoy. To all of the guests I remember as a child, "Greetings!" Aleta

My Dad (Fred Gorton) started bringing me to the Thunder Lodge to stay when I was five years old. I am now 42. Fifteen years ago my husband and I spent our honeymoon here. It was on Valentines day in l987. I have recently moved back to Colorado after living in Washington State for ten years. My father is now 76 and my mother died last year. I would enjoy very much being able to stay here again with my dad and my children and show them a place where I had many happy memories.

Having traveled to Buena Vista over the last 40 years, I find that Thunder Lodge is my "home away from home." Over the years, I've tried other Lodges within BV and found that your Lodge surpassed them all both in cleanliness and convenience of location. A small community conveniently tucked into a residential area made my cabin feel like home. Not a lot of bright lights, big parking lots... but rather soft cool evenings filled with fresh fragrances and mornings filled with such a breathtaking view of the mountains. Certainly, Thunder Lodge is a "piece of heaven".
Thank you so much for all you do for us when we stay at TL each summer. Jean Chalupsky, Omaha, Nebraska

We stayed there the middle of March and skied Monarch. It was a great time until the snow dumped on us after two days of skiing and we weren't able to get back up the third day to ski. However, James and Jane were great hosts and showed us where the locals

James and Jane went above and beyond to make sure that we had a good time.

Hi, Jim and Jane, My wife Dorothy and I just spent the weekend in Cabin 7. It was so delightful, we loved it, the privacy can't be beat, the only problem we had was with a loud mouthed mother next door to us. A word or two fixed that
tho, there were no more problems. I loved the knotty pine walls in the cabin, everything worked good. God bless you both in that business. We WILL definitely be back!!
